School News & Events

Principal Notes – 10/19/18

Dear St. Margaret Mary Families,

This week we celebrated the feast day of St. Margaret Mary during our Mass on Tuesday.  We also played for pink during the girls volleyball games.  The school raised $200.00 for the Breast Cancer Foundation during our $1 pink/jeans day.  Thank you to all who participated.

Things to Know:

Oktoberfest:  I am happy to report that Oktoberfest profits were just over $10,000. This was a great event that brought our school and parish community together. The money raised from Oktoberfest will go directly to the school budget.  Thank you again for all your support!  We are already looking to how we can grow this event for next year.

Soft Lockdown vs. Hard Lockdown:  This week the school was placed on a soft lockdown for a few hours.  The students and staff were safe and the building was secure.  We were informed that there was criminal activity in the area and as a precaution we placed the school on a soft lockdown.  A soft lockdown is used when there is a threat outside the school without immediate threat the the students inside.  During a soft lockdown the building perimeter is secured and visitors may not enter the building.  Teaching proceeds as usual. On Thursday the students were kept in the classroom and there was limited access to the building.

A hard lockdown  implies that imminent danger to the school is known.  Students are kept out of sight of the windows and doors.  Lights are usually turned off and teaching lessons stop until the threat has passed.

If you have safety question please feel free to contact me directly.

Fall Conferences: Information for Fall conferences will be sent out via email on Monday.  This year the conference schedule will be done through school speak.

Substitute Teachers: We are looking for a few more substitute teachers. If you are interested in subbing during the school year, please contact Mrs. O’Hearn.

IOWA testing: IOWA testing data is in and teachers have begun analyzing the information. This information will be presented to each family during your conference time.

Math Mornings:  Please see attachment about upcoming Math Morning events.

Veterans Day:
Please see note below from Mrs. Peterson.

Dear St. Margaret Mary Families,
St. Margaret Mary School has a long-standing tradition of honoring our veterans. An all-school assembly will be held on Monday, November 12 at 2:15 in the school gym. If you or a family member is a veteran, active or retired, please consider joining us for this special tribute to you and your service. The assembly will last approximately 30 minutes, and you will be able to sit with your family.
Please contact me no later than November 5 if you are able to join us. I will send home a short questionnaire for you to complete which will be read by an 8th grader during the assembly.
Let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to seeing you on November 12.
Thank you,
Mrs. Janet Peterson
